| Our Vision for Kabanana Home Based Care Centre The needs of AIDS orphans throughout Zambia is desperate. We watch as a generation of innocent children struggle to come to terms with their own forlorn reality. Hunger, indignity, abuse, loss of parental care and almost certain death at an early age from the scourge of AIDS. The Trustees of Kabanana Care cannot provide for all of these innocent victims, but we are determined to provide an example of what can be done to alleviate their suffering. We will provide a self-sustaining community centre for Kabanana, with buildings and facilities to provide the best possible care for these children and the foster adults that do their best to support them. There are appriximately 2000 families in the Kabanana region and the nearest clinic is 5 kilometres away. We will provide a clinic and staff to Health Board specifications to cater for the local community, particularly the orphans and more vulnerable. The children travel by foot to the Centre each day for food, basic medical attention and basic education. This must be sustained if the community is to raise itself from the economic trap they are caught in. We will provide modern kitchen and dining facilities to cater for at least 80 orphaned children and feed them each day. We will provide an open school facility for the children with qualified teaching and teaching materials. Many of the children, particularly the girls, are subject to intolerable abuse, both physical and sexual. This is etching a culture of despair and failure into a generation. We will provide safe boarding facilities for 20 or more of the most vulnerable children, and offer them a childhood based in care and support. The area has no significant industry and the opportunities for employment are very poor. Poverty levels adn malnutrition throughout the community are very high. We will provide a future skills centre, aimed at generating local industry to bring hope of future self-sufficiency and independence to the community. We will equip it and provide the materials required to train the children with the skills and courage to empower the local people and revitalise the Kabanana community. This is a bold vision we hold for the community of Kabanana, and it will take years to bring to fruition. With your support we can create a community that will be a beacon of hope for the whole of Zambia. A community that demonstrates that with our help they can lift themselves from a state of poverty, malnutrition and almost certain early death to a community that has pride and hope in the future. The Trustees of Kabanana Care do not consider we are providing just aid to this small community – we are certain we are providing the opportunity for dignified and meaningful lives to this lost generation of AIDS orphans and their carers.
